>>Larry Lessig: how creativity is being strangled by the law
-talking machines are going to ruin artistic expression
-read/write culture replaced by read only culture
-broadcasting & internet spread content–terror
-most significant oppurtunity of internet/ digital technology- can revive user generated content--using youtube-- amatuer culture- produce for love of what you are doing rather than for money-can revive read/write culture
-take something old school and re-work it to create a new style-REMIX- example:anime in music videos or jesus singing "i will survive" walking around naked downtown- and then getting smashed by a bus
-technique has been democratized-didnt know that was a word
-literacy for this generation
-architecture of copyright law- regulates copies-in digital world everything is a copy
-growing extremism for copyright law
-generation that rejects copyright and believes law is an "ass" and should be faught at every oppurtunity possible
-balance that lessig fights for-policy makers don't understand so we need a diff solution-private solution-legalize what it is to be young
-we need two types of changes: artist embrace the idea that their work is being used by amatuers-not for commercial use & we also need businesses to embrace this oppurtunity so the psychology of free content can grow-more free can compete with less free and develop creativity
i agree with the idea that artists should let amatuers use their content more freely- for example- i have found a lot of good imagery that would have worked well with my projects-however i couldn't use them- i think students especially should have more freedom with artists' content because obviously we do not have our own photographers who can go shoot pictures of castles or landscapes or models or whatever is needed
#1– graphic design is a way to visually communicate a concept/idea through the combination of image and type. graphic design is constantly changing and expanding through the enthusiasm of designers contributing to the field. it is a way to send a message through careful research and exploration. it is a way to uniquely display the ideals/meaning/intentions of the company/organization or whatever you are designing for.
#2– typography is the use of text in a visually pleasing way to complete a concept and communicate a story
#3– my responsibilities as a design student are to research, explore, and expand my knowldege of design history in order to understand graphic design to help me create the best solutions possible and get a better understanding of what works and what does not. this knowledge of design history will aslo help me make choices about what fonts to use and what style to focus on.
#4– to get the most out of my VisCom classes it is important for me to ask questions, ask for constructive criticism and learn from others. it is important to do a lot of process work and refinements in order to achieve the best solutions. it is also important for me to give feeback and brainstorm with other students in order to help eachother reach the best solutions.
